RTE & BRIAN COWEN'S NAKED CARICATURE
|
|
Controversy following RTE's apology "for any personal offence caused to Mr Cowen or his family and for any disrespect shown to the office of the Taoiseach by our broadcast". Many believe that the apology was as a result on undue political pressure and as such was a form of censorship. The story is getting legs and can be found on twitter under the hashtag #picturegate.

I went with my family to Quidam, Cirque du Soleil's current touring production.Mind-blowing - to see the entire cast hopping in patterns through six sets of overlapping skipping ropes.Mind-blowing - to see one clown command pin-drop attention from 10,000 people with a wave of his hand or a turn of his head.Mind-blowing - to see Adam and Eve test the capabilities of the human body (in slow motion) in this piece called Statue:Just mind-blowing.If you ever have to present to any audience in any setting, go to Cirque du Soleil and pick up some ideas. Last night I went, with C and the auld pair, to see Cirque du Soleil’s Quidam at the O2 arena. It was my first time to see both; suffice it to say, regarding the latter, that it is a vast improvement on its previous incarnation and probably deserves the hype - even though our seats were mediocre, and there was one particularly disturbing blue light that obstructed my view of certain aspects of the show. It’s a minor quibble, but for a show like this that’s not sold out, that works best when viewed from the front - it is, after all, based on visuals - it would be advisable not to sell tickets beside the stage, at least not farther back than 10 feet or so from the front. But I digress.
A thorough review would be unfeasible as I have neither the time nor the words, but the...

The first time when I heard about Handel Festival in Dublin, I was admittedly perplexed. Handel was German, wasn’t he? Indeed he was. What I didn’t know at that time was, he first performed his famous Messiah in Dublin, all the way back on 13th April 1742, at a music hall on Fishamble Street.
Aha, mystery solved.
This year marks the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, which took place exactly 17 years and a day to Messiah’s performance in Dublin. Therefore, Temple Bar Cultural Trust in partnership with Dublin City Council and the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism is bringing forth Handel Festival between 13th and 19th April. That’s less than 2 weeks from now for you to acquire tickets to various ticketed events, some free, some not. And not all events...

The show was perfect, from start to finish. From the moment Zoe’s parents started levitating in their chairs, it was obvious that this was a show like no other. The level of skill and obvious dedication those performers have is extraordinary. The balance of humour (with John the clown) and breathtaking stunts (my favourite being the Banquine) was impeccable, the music creating the perfect atmosphere, and background performers ensuring that there was always something to look at.
