Ballyhaunis is on RTE again today - twice in one week ! First this week we had the O’Gorman half hour visit to Ballyhaunis - which didn’t do the town many favours. He must have been on a tight budget and a short timescale. He showed us two grocery shops that look like they haven’t... Similar posts

Newspapers and Larry Murphy via Work at Home Dad, Aug 15th, 2010 at 12:58

I bought a Sunday newspaper today - and my main criteria for choosing a paper today was one that didn’t have Larry Murphy on the front page. That narowed the choice down to just 2 - The Sunday Business Post or the Independent on Sunday. ended up getting the Sunday Business Post. Why are the papers so bothered about this released prisoner called Larry Murphy who has served his sentence for rape? They are following him everywhere and encouraging people to do the same. I do not condone what he did - but he has served the sentence he was given and is entitled to his freedom. The tabloid papers stirring up hatred as... Similar posts

Top 20 Secondary Schools in Ireland via Irish Towns Guide, Apr 21st, 2010 at 22:11

According to the Sunday Times – these are the top 20 secondary schools in Ireland. They base their results on the numbers of students gaining places in autumn 2008 and 2009 at one of the nine universities on the island of Ireland, main teacher training colleges, Royal College of Surgeons, National College of Art and Design or any English,Welsh or Scottish university or equivalent. This may not be the best measure of school performance – but since the Irish government and the Irish teachers don’t want to publish exam results or carry out proper inspections with meaningful comparable results – these figures are all we have. Top 20 Schools 1  Gonzaga College, Ranelagh, Dublin 2  Colaiste Iosagain, Booterstown, Co Dublin 3  Glenstal Abbey School, Murroe, Co...... Similar posts

Bottled water - you can’t go far these days without seeing someone wandering around like an overgrown baby, clutching plastic sucky-bottles of water. My life in Ireland via EIL Intercultural Learning, Feb 25th, 2010 at 11:18

image Hun Bin 'Jackson' Lee is a current exchange student on EIL's Secondary School Programme in Ireland. Originally from Korean, Jackson has been living with a host family and going to school in Colaiste Dun Iascaigh in Cahir since August 2009 and will stay to complete the academic year in June 2010. Here are his reflections on his time spent in Ireland: My name is Hunbin from Korea. I’m also known as Jackson in Ireland. I am now participating in the International Student Programme by EIL in Ireland. I am a student in a secondary school ‘Colaiste dun Iascaigh’, which is located in Cahir, Co. Tipperary. The reason why I decided to become an exchange student was that I wanted to experience an entirely different life. Since I was a little child, I wondered how people living in the other... When is Mothers Day 2010 in Ireland and UK via Work at Home Dad, Feb 24th, 2010 at 16:25

Mothers Day is coming up soon - I know because I’ve seen a few ads online for flowers. I had to check what date Mother’s day was - it’s confusing beacuse in the USA it is on a different date to here. In America it falls on May 9th 2010 - but here in Ireland and the UK Mothers Day or Mothering Sunday falls on March 14th in 2010. Our youngest (7) will probably make something at school for his mum - but the others (teenage boys) as usual won’t bother doing anything. I usually end up buying the card and present for my wife for them and they just sign the card. It will have to stop one day.. maybe this year? For my own mother it’s usually flowers or a plant. Flowers are always a safe bet for Mothers Day - and what could be easier than ordering flowers...... Similar posts

Congratulations to Ballyhaunis schoolgirl Olwyn Murray - who won last night’s All Ireland Talent Show heat - and is now through to the semi final. The judges put her in joint third place but the public vote was enough to give her the the win. A good performance - but she will probably have to do even better to win the contest. Support Olwyn Murray - All Ireland Talent Show via Ballyhaunis Blog, Jan 19th, 2010 at 13:50

Ballyhaunis Leaving Cert student - 16 year old Olwyn Murray is through to the next round of the RTE All Ireland Talent Show on 24th January 2010 at 6.30pm . The show will be coming LIVE from Dublin . Find details here of how to vote (available from Sunday at 6pm ) It is probably too late - but anyone can apply for free audience tickets by calling 01 4480500 or email audience@tyrone-productions.ie Olwyn is one of 8 contestants left in from the West - and the only one from Co Mayo. She doesn’t seem to have got the online publicity going - not like some of the other contestants. The Leaving Cert is probably taking priority. Hopefully the publicity in the local papers and radio stations will work just as well for Olwyn. She is up against a “novelty” gay band fronted... Similar posts

Schools can re-open on Tuesday via Ballyhaunis Blog, Jan 11th, 2010 at 12:46

Batt O’Keefe has seen sense at last and reversed his instruction to keep all schools closed until Thursday. He has said today that schools can now open if local management think it is safe to do so. http://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/okeeffe-to-allow-schools-to-reopen-tomorrow-441478.html The majority of roads around here are safe - some are still icy but passable. It will be interesting to see if Ballyhaunis Community School will decide to open - hopefully they will? Over in the UK - conditions are worse and some schools are closed - but the UK Education Secretary Ed Balls is encouraging schools to open and not focus on the negatives. He said schools need to “take a balanced view and not to overstate risks like slipping in the playground, or having slightly less... Similar posts
